New Hospital
The project
This new build hospital finished in 2019 provides 300 beds, 7 operating theatres and 5 catheterisation labs. Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology was used in the design phase to maximise energy efficiency and ensure the hospital offers long-term flexibility.
The challenge
We were responsible for the civil and structural design of the permanent works, including concrete and steel buildings; foul and surface water drainage; external works; hospital roads and car parks.
Skanska, with healthcare delivery expertise spread across its global network of projects, provided Cambridgeshire with a hospital that is an exemplar of the facilities available to NHS patients and clinicians.
The solution
The construction techniques used allow reconfiguration of the hospital over time, making it fit for purpose both on delivery and for the future. The technology is also being used to engage clinicians in the construction process.
A reinforced concrete frame with post-tensioned slabs was used to form the structure, which confirms to relevant eurocodes and health technical memoranda.
The outcomes
Sustainability
The use of BIM resulted in the building being designed more energy efficiently. This would have future uses for tenants alongside saving fuel and helping combat Climate Change.
Optimum delivery
STL Liaised with multiple supply chain partners and with central Skanska Building OU. These collaborative relationships resulted in many benefits for the client.
Collaborative BIM use
3D BIM Models were used to identify defects and quality issues prior to completion.
Relationship with Local Authorities
Josie Rudman, Chief Nurse at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: “So much thought has gone into the design of the new hospital and it’s wonderful to see how the layout and the facilities in the new building will help us deliver even better patient care. It is going to be a great place to work, and I just can’t wait to get there now.”
